The Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies is hosting a public lecture by Dr. Angelica Patterson, a plant ecophysiologist from Mount Holyoke College. She will talk about how climate change impacts tree species in northeastern forests and their ability to store carbon. As these forests recover from past farming and logging, they play a crucial role in carbon storage. Patterson’s research looks at how tree species react to temperature changes, their resilience, and what this means for carbon storage. Her findings suggest that native trees like Northern red oak and red maple may struggle compared to moving species like pignut hickory and American sycamore, potentially leading to their replacement.
